TED is coming to Vancouver BC

TED is coming to Vancouver. Repeat, TED – as in world famous conference focused on Technology, Entertainment, and Design – is coming to Vancouver. And this isn’t just a conference being held in Vancouver, TED is literally moving it’s location for West Coast conferences which are currently held in Long Beach and Palm Springs, California to Vancouver and Whistler, BC. As of March 17th – 24th in 2014, TED will be celebrating it’s 30th anniversary by making the move to Hollywood North.

Other changes include the layout of the theatre where the keynote speakers will present their speeches. TED organizers are looking to have a more intimate setting for their attendees and are scaling back the number of people that the theatre can hold – from the standard 1400 to a much smaller 1200. While TED talks have become YouTube sensations available for everyone to see, the actual experience is much more exclusive. [success]Seats at TED cost $7,500 to attend and it’s not just a matter of first come, first served, you have to actually apply and be approved to purchase the ticket and obtain a spot..[/success] This is no surprise seeing as annual TED attendees boast members such as Oprah Winfrey and Bill Gates.

Of course, there is always the prestigious TED award. Each nominee makes a ‘wish’, something they would do to better the world, and then a couple are chosen and given $100,000 to go out there and make that dream a reality. Previous recipients include U2 lead singer and activist Bono, British chef and healthy lifestyle advocate Jamie Oliver, and former US President Bill Clinton. It would be great to see a Canadian win this award on our home turf for the first time.

It’s a great honor that TED has chosen one of Canada’s lovely cities as it’s new home. Let’s just cross our fingers and hope that this goes well. After all, we haven’t gotten the greatest reputation since the riot-that-shall-not-be-spoken-of. But hopefully we’ve learned our lesson.

[notice]So, welcome TED![/notice]
