Do’s and Don’ts of Social Media Marketing
Social Media Marketing is fairly new when put up against other traditional marketing methods. This means that most people are still trying to figure out exactly how it works and what makes it successful. This process can be long and you may experience many pitfalls along the way. We are here to give you a basic guide to what you should and should not do when it comes to Social Media Marketing.
DO:
Have a plan! Social Media Marketing is not as simple as creating an account and starting to use the platform. You must have a clear and concise plan on what you hope to achieve with Social Media Marketing and how exactly you hope to achieve that. It helps to set goals. For example, in the next three months we would like to triple the number of Twitter followers we have. This is a goal that you must then work towards by giving followers a call to action of some sort and move on from there.
DON’T:
Assume that all social media is the same. This is the number one mistake that all people who are new to Social Media Marketing make. You cannot apply the same plan to every format of social media – it simply won’t work. Take the time to research marketing methods for each platform and then plan accordingly – trust us, you’ll be thankful you did in the long run.
DO:
Listen to your customers. This is essential, social media is all about the conversation and how easy it is to communicate through these various platforms. Don’t be afraid to speak directly to your customers and ask them what it is they’d like to see from you. You’ll be surprised at how much useful input you’ll receive – it’s like constantly having a focus group, but online!
DON’T:
Talk too much. Ever heard of a picture is worth a thousand words? Well in the universe of Social Media Marketing, an image is worth about 200% more engagement than words. So get creative, try to submit fun and engaging images through your various social media channels and watch your customer involvement grow right in front of your eyes!
DO:
Think before you post. Look, we all make mistakes, but when a mistake is made on the internet – you can never take it back. Be smart about the content you put out and carefully execute your Social Media Marketing strategies so that you don’t have to do any damage control for an avoidable blunder.
DON’T:
Assume that your strategy is working right off the bat. This is a huge mistake. Make sure that you always have an eye on your ROI (return on investment) when it comes to Social Media Marketing. If your strategies aren’t working, you need to change them quickly and your ROI is a an excellent way to measure the effectiveness of your plans.
