Instagram vs. Vine
Recently the popular photo sharing app Instagram introduced a new feature – 15 second videos. Users were immediately proving that the change was a positive one and that the feature would only improve the app. Within minutes of the update videos were being shared via Instagram and interestingly enough, many had the same train of thought – now that Instagram has videos it’s sure to be the end of popular video sharing app Vine. Here is what we make of the situation:
[success]1.Ownership[/success]
We have to admit, Instagram introducing video wasn’t exactly a surprise. When it was acquired by Facebook, the app quickly became a giant in it’s own right. Vine on the other hand is owned by Twitter and developers certainly let the ball drop by keeping the updates few and far in between. Facebook is always trying to improve itself and so is Instagram. In order to be competitive, they had to introduce not only a video feature, but one that would blow Vine out of the water. With Instagram videos can be 15 seconds long compared to the minuscule 6 seconds allowed on Vine.
[success]2. App Store[/success]
The results are obvious with rankings on the app store how the new update has hurt Vine. Dropping an average of 6 spots worldwide in less than four days, it’s undeniable that Instagram’s video feature had the desired effect. Meanwhile, Instagram stays comfortably in the top 5 on the app store, muscling it’s way past other photo and video apps such as iMovie, Snapseed, and Halftone.

Many are saying that with Vine’s quick rise to popularity (over 5 million video uploads in 24 hours) it was only a matter of time before the app lost it’s popular edge. Instagram on the other hand has had a steady rise in popularity and doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon. The most recent results show that Instagram has over 130 million users on a daily basis while Vine only has about 13 million daily users. We think the numbers speak for themselves.
