3 Tips For Successful Onboarding

First of all – what is onboarding? This is a process in which you reach out to your customers and clients and provide them with new information in order to become a successful user of your product. This generally is a term used in the technology industry, where new products or system upgrades often require users to adjust their current habits or learn new software. Below, we outline 3 tips to ensure that your customer onboarding is successful.

This is probably the most important part of the onboarding process, you need to know from your first batch of customers what needs to be changed, what they like or don’t like, and where they were struggling – this is crucial during this stage because as we so often see (looking at you, iphone 6) once your product hits the market and certain mistakes are not fixed, it can be detrimental to your sales and lead to more than just a few customer issues.

One sure fire way to let people down is to promise something that you simply cannot deliver. We’re not saying don’t hype up your product, more so, we’re saying know when to stop hyping it up. It’s so easy to want to label something as “revolutionary” or “state of the art” but that’s just asking for a let down. Instead, highlight the features with phrases like “easy to use” or “great new design” – that way you’re telling your customers what to expect without setting yourself up for failure.

There are changes that need to happen and then there are changes that don’t need to happen. What we mean by this is that so often companies will look at their competition and try to match their features and updates in order to stay relevant. This is where the phase “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” fits in. Just because your competitor has some things that you don’t, doesn’t mean that they’re better than you. A great way to find out what customer want in their next update is to send out surveys and then work towards that in the future.
