Lessons From The Microsoft Fashion Show
When the words “fashion show” come to mind, you probably don’t think of Microsoft. After all, technology and fashion are two entirely different worlds, right? Wrong. Recently, Microsoft had it’s 6th fashion show called Geek to Chic by partnering with Bloomingdale’s as a way to raise money for charity. Below we’ll outline how this big company is thinking outside the box when it comes to being charitable:
[success]Why?[/success]
This is most likely the first question die-hard Microsoft users would ask. This event raises money for Microsoft’s worldwide youth initiative which helps young people get access to better education, jobs, skills, and opportunities. By taking their influential position in the world seriously and being socially responsible, Microsoft has managed to find a worthy cause, partner with a retail giant, and have repetitive success with this event that has already been featured in 4 major cities.

[success]How?[/success]
You may assume that the Geek to Chic fashion show would simply feature typical models with glasses and briefcases. Well, not exactly. What they actually do is get 26 members in the local technology industry to volunteer to strut their stuff down the runway while raising money for a great cause. That’s not exactly an easy thing to do – but as these successful tech professionals know, a huge part of entrepreneurship is getting out of your comfort zone, taking chances, and believing in what you’re doing.
[success]What?[/success]
Sure, it’s a fundraising fashion show. But it’s also a prime opportunity for technology industry professionals to network, talk, and make connections to further the good work that’s being done. So what lesson should we take away from this? If you’re a big company, find a fun and effective way to give back to the community. If you’re a local charity, don’t be shy when asking to partner up with companies for events. Finally, if you’re an entrepreneur, get involved somehow – attend the event, make a donation, and don’t forget to network.
