No More Vowels on Twitter

Twitter is arguably the most efficient form of social media with each tweet required to be 140 characters or less. This of course prompts many people to use abbreviations or various web-speak acronyms to tweet longer messages without going over the strict limit. Now, Twitter is stepping it up a notch – no more vowels. Here’s what happened:

Twitter has introduced this two-tiered model because “we believe that by eliminating vowels, we’ll encourage a more efficient and “dense” form of communication. We also see an opportunity to diversify our revenue stream.” (Source: http://blog.twitter.com/2013/03/annncng-twttr.html). Because 140 characters isn’t enough of a challenge, apparently. Not to worry, the letter “Y” is free! And speaking of which…

Using this new Twitter – or Twttr – is going to be an interesting process for sure. Twitter is quite literally holding your vowels for ransom. Of course, you can get your vowels back by forking over $5 a month, or you can get creative. Some people are substituting all their vowels with “Y”s while others are getting crafty and using numbers to replace vowels, like the obvious zero instead of“O” or a three as sort of a backwards “E”.

This is a bold move on Twitter’s part – the question now is will it pay off? Many are calling this an attempt at making more money, on the other hand that may not be an issue. Are people so enamored with this social media platform that they’ll give up their vowels to use it or will this be the end of Twitter as we know it? What could they possibly do next? Take away our emoticons?!
